Theo Payne is an illustrator from the depths of Wales. He’s a fan of bright colours and nice shapes.
What’s your connection to Brighton and what do you dig about the city?
I was actually born in Brighton and, after years of living away, I’ve come crawling back to study. There’s definitely a ‘look’ to the city, but there’s also a nice atmosphere that feels like you can express yourself however you want and everybody’ll just go with it.
It feels like everyone’s trying to make stuff all the time -whoever you meet- and that’s really nice.
Can you briefly elaborate on your creative process, mediums used etc?
I do a lot of digital collage. I start with really childlike drawings and mash them together later on, adding layers of pencil or paint or whatever. I’ve been simplifying a lot of this lately though, going for some nice strong shapes and colours. I like to have a theme in my work and I find narrative really helps to bring out more interesting ideas; ideally, I’d have a story to go with every piece.
Any current/future projects you can share with us?
I’m working on a few different things at the moment, but I’m just starting to get my claws into small amounts of editorial illustration which is a lot of fun. I’m really interested in getting more into animation in the future, branching out from GIFs to longer pieces of work, characters and that.
Current guilty pleasure/s:
Getting really into Smash Mouth lately.
Obv, the greatest illustrator of all time is…
I couldn’t say! Everyone knows art is subjective blah blah, but if I absolutely had to name my favourite illustrator it’d probably be Mervyn Peake. Although there could be some nostalgia bias happening there…
